She started her professional career in 1990 in an off Broadway production called The Big Funk, by John Patrick Shanley. The show was later adapted to her first role on television, The Perfect Tribute. In 1992 she got her breakthrough after being cast in the film Basic Instinct as a minor role. It was in the movie The Firm however that she was cast as the female lead for the first time, and this was also against famous actors such as Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman. She worked in the 90s with many top actors in Hollywood, like Gwyneth Paltrow as well as Hugh Grant. Most recently, she played her character of the character of Dr. Alex Blake in Criminal Minds.
